Established in 1977, RS Boiler Services now has more than 40 years of experience in the highly specialised fields of gas, LPG, and oil-fired central heating systems, plumbing, and electrical work. Ray Skoyles trained as a gas engineer as an apprentice with British Gas™ from the young age of 16. He has since continued to work very hard over the next 50 years, building a long-standing and well-respected company with a prestigious royal heritage having proudly served the Royal Household for more than 25 years as a trusted heating and plumbing services company.
It is not just because we are one of the longest-registered Corgi and Gas Safe-registered heating and plumbing companies in the UK (Gas Safe reg no 62), or because we have some of the most loyal and satisfied customers; you should choose us because we are a company that takes pride in our staff, our track record, and the integrity and quality of our work.
We employ all of our staff, unlike many other heating installers, and we aim to make sure that our engineers are supported fully by giving them the opportunity to develop their training across a broad range of technologies and practices. This ensures that they attain the highest qualifications across the broad spectrum of our work. By having each of them employed by us, we can assure customers that we never have subcontracted labour, which means there are no hidden costs and that you get the benefit of having the same engineers visiting you every time.
RS Boiler Services is a small, family-run business, and as such we are fairly selective over those that we wish to employ. Generally, we train in-house and like to promote from within. This means that we are always willing to look at apprenticeships and find hidden talent. Over the years, we have taken on a number of young apprentices from nearby Amersham and Wycombe College, and are always happy to hear from other young and motivated individuals. We are also happy to receive CVs and applications from those who have already attained Gas Safe or OFTEC™ certification.
Ray started his career in London in the 60s as a gas engineer working for the gas board. After many enjoyable years converting the nation's capital's gas network from a deadly 'town gas' to the safer and more efficient natural gas that we all use today, he looked to be his own boss, and so RS Boiler Services was born.
Having moved into Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, with his soon-to-be-wife, Ray took up tenancy of a shop on Furlong Road, and from there began working alongside other local trades, recruiting capable engineers to serve their ever-growing customer base. The clients included Chelsea Football Club in South West London, various Royal Household residences such as Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle, and, of course, the wider domestic market around Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
Joy started her career as a tracer in a drawing office in West London, aiding consulting engineers in the practice of structural safety before being tempted back to her home town of Bourne End by a smooth-talking gas engineer. She soon took up the important role of deciphering the cryptic, handwritten estimates and invoices of RS Boiler Services, and strived to ensure that they were delivered promptly to our happy customers in a more legible condition.
Adam trained on the job with RS Boiler Services over a fairly short period in 2009, hoping to use his newly gained LPG gas qualification as a shortlisted trade skill for a move to New Zealand. Previous to this, he studied for a degree in business management at Bournemouth University and went on to help manage a hotel, a bar, and a restaurant over the three years following his graduation before travelling the world for 18 months. After meeting his now wife at a music festival on the Isle of Wight, Adam is now here to stay, and he hopes to take on more of the day-to-day running of the business as time goes on.
Darryl has been working for RS Boiler Services since 1985 and has become a core component of the company throughout his time here. He has developed encyclopedic knowledge of boiler breakdowns over the years, and has a van full of homemade tools to help him overcome the more common of these. He seems to be so well-informed with many of these boiler temperaments that not only does he help train the apprentices coming into RS Boiler Services, but he also gets called upon by engineers of outside organisations. However, he has yet to disclose his extra earnings from this technical helpline.
Simon started working with RS Boiler Services as an apprentice in 2014 after deciding his previous career in vehicle maintenance wasn't for him. When someone makes the decision to take a pay cut, for an undisclosed amount of time, in order to retrain in a different profession, we believe it speaks volumes as to the dedication and the spirit of that individual.
It is safe to say that Simon has not disappointed, and he now finds himself a fully qualified, Gas Safe-registered engineer as of 2017, and we are proud and relieved to find him wishing to stick with us to help us continue with our aim of providing continuous good service to our customers.
Ryan has been working alongside Darryl, Adam, and Simon since 2016 in his ongoing on-the-job training after deciding to concentrate on plumbing and heating having been involved in general construction for the more than 10 years.
Ryan recently become a dad to a little girl, and we are delighted that he is still determined to pursue a career in plumbing and heating, despite the loss of some earnings in the short term while he goes through training. This determination is clearly displayed in his work with us so far, and we have had nothing but glowing reviews from customers on his diligence, attention to detail, and cleanliness on completion of work. We see a good future for Ryan, and we are sure that it won't be long before he's ready for Gas Safe qualification.
